Peak XV Raises Surge Seed Ceiling to $5M for 18 Startups

Peak XV Partners, one of the largest venture capital firms investing in India and Southeast Asia with more than $10 billion in assets under management, has significantly increased its seed-stage investment capacity while unveiling its latest startup cohort. The firm has raised the ceiling for its Surge program investments from $3 million to $5 million per company, marking a substantial shift in its early-stage funding strategy.

The newly announced Surge 12 cohort becomes the first group to operate under this increased investment ceiling. Peak XV invested more than $50 million across the 18 startups in this batch, which have collectively raised over $90 million in seed funding. The decision to increase investment amounts reflects changing market dynamics, particularly the rising bar for Series A funding rounds and the emergence of more capital-intensive companies in sectors like deeptech.

The composition of Surge 12 reveals an increasingly global focus for the program. While more than half of the companies are based in India, only five of the 18 startups are actually targeting the Indian market. The remaining 13 companies aim for global markets, highlighting a clear distinction between where these businesses are built and where they plan to find their customers. The cohort spans diverse locations from San Francisco to Sydney, representing Peak XV’s broadening geographic reach.

Since launching in 2019, when Peak XV still operated as Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia, Surge has backed more than 180 startups. These companies were founded by entrepreneurs representing more than 18 nationalities, demonstrating the program’s international appeal. The track record shows significant scale, with the 10 largest companies from previous Surge cohorts now generating more than $1 billion in combined annual revenue.

The Surge 12 startups span a wide range of sectors including AI, robotics, space technology, consumer products, healthcare, music, and fintech. The founder profile for these companies typically includes repeat entrepreneurs, experienced operators from established tech companies, and highly specialized technical founders. Between 50% to 60% of a typical Surge cohort comes from operating roles at established technology companies, bringing valuable industry experience to their ventures.

Several companies in the new cohort had already secured significant funding before joining Surge. Ditto, an AI dating matchmaker operating inside iMessage for college students, raised $9.2 million in a Peak XV-led seed round. Rosella, which is building an AI-native commercial insurance brokerage for U.S. businesses, raised roughly $2.5 million in a pre-seed round led by Peak XV and Intact Private Capital. ULOOK, developing autonomous satellite systems for radio-frequency sensing, had already raised roughly $2.3 million.

Among the notable companies in the cohort, August AI stands out for its reach, with the healthcare platform combining AI and physician-led care now serving over 9 million users across 160 countries. The company was founded in 2022 following a personal medical misdiagnosis experienced by its founder, an IIT-BHU alumnus. ULOOK’s founders bring deep technical expertise, having worked on more than 12 satellite missions before launching their startup.

The cohort represents Peak XV’s continued commitment to seed-stage investing as one component of its broader investment strategy. The firm maintains involvement with companies as they progress through later funding rounds, providing ongoing support beyond the initial seed investment through the Surge program.
